About the Kartoffel-Kiste
It is the star of Duisburg's oldest restaurant. Nothing works without it. Nothing at all. This is partly due to its indestructible nature, its many talents and its very special strength: good flavour.
The Kartoffel-Kiste serves the star of the region sometimes with and sometimes without the skin - boiled, sliced, mashed, fried and even roasted. They are available warm and cold, hot and iced, but one thing is for sure: not as chips.
Everything is home-made in the Kartoffel-Kiste, from classic potato pancakes to potato schnapps. Many of the kitchen tricks really do come from grandma's kitchen.
Why not try the crispy potato pancakes with fresh apple compote or smoked salmon? Or how about endive with black pudding or home-made panhas. The savoury potato pancakes and potato noodles in different variations are also very popular.
If regional cuisine is too hearty and shirt-sleeved for you, you are also welcome to dine on Mediterranean cuisine - such as pork fillet, sliced with fresh herbs and spices from Tuscany, dried herb tomatoes, Italian cheese and black olives on potato noodles.
Of course, our menu also offers vegetarians a selection of tasty dishes.
The Kartoffel-Kiste is located at the foot of the Kaiserberg, very close to Duisburg Zoo and not far from the inner harbour. The quaint half-timbered house is a listed building and when you step onto the small, creaky wooden floorboards, you can hear and feel the age of the building. This gives it that unmistakable ambience - quaint Lower Rhine hospitality with old half-timbering, lots of wood and full of tradition.
A blacksmith named Henrich Pottmann ran a small restaurant here as early as 1770, and the Bode family has been running the Kartoffel-Kiste in its current form since 1983.
Four dining rooms on two floors offer 120 seats - plus 180 chairs in the cosy beer garden in summer.
